On nitro-tap 6/5/2016 at Bukowski Tavern in Boston, MA, served in a nonic pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short very dense tan head that fades very slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, hops, chocolate and some citrus.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty roasted malt character up front. Then some mildly sweet flavors of chocolate and coffee come in. The hops presence is mild for the style but creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and extremely smooth, medium body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is dry and clean for the style.

O: Very tasty, goes down quite easily, not too filling, mild kick, very good representation of style, this is a very good beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

Brewed in collaboration with Lower Depths (in Kenmore Square). Advertised as a black IPA with 65 pounds of hops. Served with a nitro tap at lower depths on February 13.

Beautiful cascading upward head. Ever so slightly beige. It leaves chunky blanketing lace on the glass. Near black in color (naturally) where no light shines through the edge.

Smells of semisweet chocolate. I detect no hop to the nose. A touch sour.

The taste is complex and not at all like the smell. Starts off with burnt malt flavors. There is a light cocoa in the background but it's not chocolate. The hop is pronounced in the swallow and fairly straightforward leaving a long aftertaste along with an ash-like finish.

With the nitro, all of these elements seem to work well. If you read this review and are in the Boston area, you may wish to come to LD in Kenmore to try this.
