Did the barrel race with this one on 7/10/2006. 10.5 oz. goblet pour at the never disappointing Redbones.
Thin skim of quickly dissipating but swirling head that leaves only a little lacing. Thick amber hue with some light brown tones and lots of slow action percolating about. Very throaty peat moss on the nose with some pronounced oak as well. Holy cow, the cask notes kick in to high gear with the added smoky malt sweetness on the tongue; almost a medicinal quality to it, like syrup, but unlike when I was a kid and crinkled my nose, I want more. Jammy on the mouth with a residual sweetness.
Holy crap, I wish I saw more of this around.

sampled on-tap at the wonderful dirty truth in northampton, mass.. $5 for a snifter.
as my excitement from locating this beer subsides, so has the foam.. voila, time to drink. raisin-colored, allowing some light passage. thin, delicate layer of creamy head haze, like a still cappuccino. the aroma is full of sweet cream and bourbon, with a warped malt tartness. age is apparent through the nose, and leads this beer even further into the liquor/port/thomas hardy's territory. this is a pristine, grey-haired, smoking-jacket-wearing local beer. i am proud of what i see and smell here.
oh yeah, jackie d is in the house. metaphorically speaking. you a fan of bourbon? neat? this beer is for you (and me). the woody flavors that define the southern spirit are forefront, and the sweet- almost belgian- fruity malts do a wonderful job of balancing the harshness and making this extremely drinkable. smoothness is key here, while maintaining a lower level of carbonation missing in beers like le coq and goose island bcs. maybe because this is a tap only offering, who knows.. they hit this puppy up right. finish bears some controlled diacetyl.. vanilla frosted butter cookie that's been softening in my tumbler full o' jack. sublime.
traditional scotch ale flavors benefit this blend, but overall.. this is jack daniels flavored beer. love it or go home.
