This beer was had at a beer dinner at Chandler's Tavern, at the Yankee Candle flagship store in South Deerfield, MA on 1-19-07. It was paired with beef broth with sausage meatballs.
This beer was a hazy deep yellow, with a thin layer of foam for a head. Looking at other peoples' glasses, none had any real head to speak of.
The aroma was fruity, kind of like apricots or peaches. It was yeasty and bready, a little like toasted biscuits, and there was a definite spiciness to it. The yeasty quality did not surprise me, as this beer was unfiltered.
Taste was slightly bitter, toasty/bready, with some lighter bodied malts playing a prominent role. It was slightly earthy, and a bit like black pepper or similar spice. No real hoppiness stood out. When tasted just after a spoonful of soup (with some meatball) a little bit of banana quality came through.
Mouthfeel was pretty good for the style... nothing that jumped out and made it spectacular, but it did have a bit of body.
Drinkability was pretty good. It was paired very well.
This beer was made with Styrian Goldings hops, and candi sugar was added to help boost the alcohol content.
