Let me start by saying, I love BBC. One my of favorite 'local' breweries, so to visit them and tour the facilities was really a treat for me. While there, on tap, they had a special IPA that was aged in old (so not very strong) Bourbon Barrels. At first my thought? Bourbon Barrel IPA, weird, not sure how this will go over.
Had the barrels been new and not old/used, this may not have worked so lovely. I have never heard nor enjoyed and IPA that utilized the bourbon flavor. For most factors, this looked like a normal IPA, little darker and more amber in color but nothing to raise warning signs.
The noise was hops and bourbon, but not really strong bourbon like you might expect. It was a sweet hoppy aroma that begged to be sipped, with a backdrop of warm bourbon.
The taste was very similar to a more hoppy Lost Sailor with a slight bourbon aftertaste that in no way overpowered or ruined the experience. The flavors melded pretty harmoniously, curious as to the ABV though as I do remember thinking it had just the slightest hint of alcohol which in their beers you normally do not notice.
All I can say it, go there and try it. Very happy to see them expanding into new realms as well as larger capacity.
