This is a pretty exciting and unusual one... I haven't even thought about Berkshire Brewing for several years, so to see a fruited DIPA with a surprisingly-intriguing sounding list of hops/added ingredients pop up in the new arrivals at my local go-to beer spot was pretty weird, indeed. This was canned on 10/14/21, making it just over a month old, but I have a feeling that'll work out pretty well for it. Maybe some of these flavors and adjuncts will settle down and integrate a bit. Ah yes, on to that part... this is an 8% DIPA dry-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, and Sabro, and also features additions of peach, apricot, and cara cara oranges. Like I said, weird. I don't think it's going to be a sour IPA or anything either, so let's just jump right in!
Pours a very nice looking saturated orange color topped off with an initially-solid head of off-white foam that settles to a quarter-finger after a few minutes. Spotty, soapy lace and little-to-no legs, but the surface still has a couple small islands of suds lingering on top. Subsequent smaller pours re-rouse the head to its initial measurement, though I would bet that the fruit additions did something to hurt the retention here. That said, still a pretty aesthetically-pleasing offering!
Nose is heavy on the stone fruit element, as to be expected from the peach and apricot additions. A bit of bright berry and juicy mango popping out here and there as well. Almost smells a bit like a peach bellini, along with hints of grassiness coming out as it warms a bit. Nice citrus qualities from the Citra working with the oranges. The cara cara orange varietal has some berry elements, interestingly enough, and I think it's smart to involve Mosaic in this kind of recipe. Just seems like a really inspired project, so I'm hopeful that it'll pop on the palate, too!
Apricots and nectarines are prominent on the tongue, with some nice Citra backup in the hop department. I'm getting some ripe papaya and mango with less overdone Sabro than I figured there would be. I don't really necessarily have anything against Sabro, but I tend to dislike the nearly-cloying coconut aspect it can bring to the table. Luckily, that isn't present here! It's mostly a nice and juicy affair overall. The 8% ABV isn't really too apparent either, so I'm quite enjoying the experience of sipping on this one. Solid mouthfeel with a hint of slickness upfront tempered by semi-dry finishing textures. I figured 2021 had some tricks up 'er sleeve still, but one I never expected is a fruited DIPA from Berkshire Brewing that is actually really successful. Hope to see more new, creative stuff from them soon!
