At the brewery.
Pitch black color with a thick beige head with good retention.
Aroma with predominant notes of licorice, grape jelly and plums.
Flavor with notes of cola, lots of grape jam, spices, coffee, grapefruit citrusy, licorice and mild charcoal. Dry and bitter aftertaste with persistent hoppy and roasted notes.
Medium to full body with appropriate carbonation. Alcohol of 10.2% abv is superbly well hidden.
Dark fruity Imperial Porter that showed a character of its own. I found this better than its one down generation (Pop’s) brew that gained the GABF award.

an imperial version of their medal winning and all around fantastic porter. i didnt like this one nearly as much. the beer is poured almost flat from the tap after a minute, and boozy, thin, and weirdly textured all the way though. its too bad, because the flavors are fine, huge heaps of dark barley in this one, with some bitterness and also a sort of earthy richness, especially in the aroma. dark chocolate abounds, but its almost like chocolate liqueur, slick and slippery, warming to say the least. i do wish for a little more body to round this out, but the flavors are good, some vanilla here, burnt bread, and raw cocoa. we all found the alcohol to be a little much, this would be better and a more comfortable brew in the 8% abv range instead of pushing 10%. a neat idea to imperialize the pops, but dont mess with a good thing sometimes is good advice. i liked all the beers here, some seemed to be reaching a bit, this one included. not even close to as good as the original, and it needs some carbonation, but the flavors they have developed are unique and robust.

Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch!
Arrives black as pitch with a small, espresso colored head, well, a film really. A ring lasts for a long time an deposits a bit of lace.
Smell is rich with malt, molasses, rum soaked raisins, some smoke and soy notes, too. Great balance.
Taste is everything above with a touch of anise added. Phenomenal balance.
Almost full bodied & just short of sticky. Light effervescence. Decent amount of warming and a bit dry at the end. Get some!
