Not sure if this beer was a bad apple or what...but I won't be giving it another shot. Looks like a well constructed stout out of the capped and waxed bottle - oily black body with a frothy moderate brown head. Smell is where things start changing. Aroma of roasted malt and wax. I'm smelling the cap, malt and that's about it. Taste was chocolate, burnt coffee grounds and...green apple. There's a tartness that's unexpected and unpleasant. Carbonated like soda which makes it feel you're drinking a muddled chocolate-cherry cola.

Black colored beer with a tall brown colored head. Looks like used motor oil.
Smells of patent malt and burned sugar. Scents of chocolate and caramel with some coffee. Sent of burning chocolate cake. Fairly boozy alcohol is not hidden.
Starts out bitter and a little sour. Sour from the patent malt. Taste of mineral water. Smoke flavor. Acrid patent malt flavor.
Mouthfeel is OK.
Overall just an average Imperial Stout.

Unpleasantly sour and undrinkable. For BR's sake, I hope it was a bad batch and not the intentional taste of the beer. Terrible — down the drain (the beer and $12).

This beer is an imperial stout by strength only. Appearance was a brief fizzy brown head, no lace. Almost no aroma. Flavor is a very mild stout. Body is a bit thin and again carbonation is fizzy. Totally forgettable.

Foul, so very, very foul. Let's start where this beer did best, it's flavor. There wasn't much to speak of and it wasn't altogether pleasant, but there were definitely some stout-like flavors present. Unfortunately, the beer was very thin and combined with this, it was carbonated like a bottle of Coke. These combined to create an extremely unpleasant mouthfeel. Perhaps the most disappointing part of the John Paul Jones Stout was its complete and utter lack of any aroma, it was like smelling dried out dust.
