The can says this pours jet black, but it’s really more of a dark mahogany brown, and there is indeed a light tan head. The nose has cocoa and roasty coffee notes, which are nice.
The taste also has the cocoa and roasty coffee notes, but there’s a pretty significant hop flavor as well. This drinks well, but actually leans more to the porter style, and is something I’d drink again.

Smooth and chocolaty, this stout is a classic. Everyone thinks a stout has to be barrel aged or have 12% abv in order to be great now... that is not the case here, valiant drinks easy and leaves you wanting another glass... careful, they sneak up on you.

Poured into a Spiegelau stout glass a beautiful dark mahogany brown hue with a 2" head that slowly receded leaving nice lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma & taste w/faint of coffee & chocolate. Tangy, slightly creamy but thin mouth feel and a somewhat dry finish. Overall a decent stout.

Tried this at the Beer Bourbon Bacon Festival in Fort Wayne, IN.
A - Dark brown color. Clear and not as black as most stouts I've tried. Pours nicely with light khaki colored creamy head with light lacing.
S - Lots of hops at the beginning, herbal, floral, some citrus. But after that there is the accompanying roasted malt, and chocolate tones that become more noticeable.
T - Delicious flavor having more tame character with a malty, roasty, chocolaty, and some sweetness but the hops stand tall. A well hopped American Stout with enough pine, citrus, herbal hops to go with the sweet malt and chocolate flavors. The bitterness from the hops and roasted malt is there but both are mild and balanced out by the sweeter malt character.
M - Moderate mouth-feel with moderate carbonation. This sits square in the middle between a bigger stout and a dry stout but I always prefer my stouts to have more body.
Overall, this is a really good American Stout. I enjoy the blend of American hops and the richness of the body all in a more moderate package to be more drinkable and less of a palate wrecker. I would definitely recommend this beer to someone who already likes Guinness or lighter darker beers.
