Bottle at share. Copper colored pour, bubbly off-white head . Malty aroma, leathery, toffee, notes of tobacco. Taste is malty, dry, tannins, molasses. A fair amount of bitterness too

On tap for the recent annual anniversary event at Belmont Station.

At two years of age now, the beer pours the expected fairly dark amber color with fairly decent head retention and lacing. The aroma profile suggests a very sweet beer, with considerable vanilla, molasses and English toffee. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, though at this point there's some noticeable alcohol in the finish, and the sweetness seems a bit much. Mouthfeel is full and smooth, but as noted previously, with some noticeable alcohol in the finish. At this point the beer is so sweet and boozy, it's hard to imagine drinking a whole lot of this (the 4 ounce taster glass I purchased was more than sufficient).

Belmont Station indicated on the menu that this was their last keg, and I'd say that's just as well. I doubt this beer is going to improve with additional aging, and in fact I expect its best days are behind it. A nice enough beer, but not something I would ever want to revisit.

Appearance - Pours a ruddy brown that turns a beautiful ruby color when held to light. Khaki, half-finger head that dies rather quickly, revealing a thin, broken head. Not much for lacing, with only a few random spots.

Smell - Aroma is strongly sweet with brown sugar, maple and some lighter caramel character.

Taste - Wow. Follows the nose. Lots of maple/brown sugar/toffee/caramel sweetness. A bit of oak comes through mid-taste. Some vanilla as well. Very sweet throughout. A hint of earthiness in the finish, but mostly toffee/brown sugar sweetness ends it as it starts.

Mouthfeel - Near full-bodied with moderate carbonation. Fair syrupy texture, but goes down easy enough with a slightly dry finish,

Overall - Fairly sweet, simple BA barleywine. Good, but for the price I would not recommend. Not especially balanced, nor does the barrel aging really shine through. It's cool that a bottle shop as legendary as Belmont Station has an anniversary beer brewed every year in it's honor, but this thing needs work, or maybe lots and lots of aging to kill all the prominent sweetness.

Listed as an American Barleywine, but sold to me at B.S. as "similar" to the hard to obtain (in Oregon) Midnight Sun Acrtic Devil - English style Barleywine. And I think that's 'sorta' right - Though it clearly lacks the absolute perfection of Arctic Devil. It has that English quality (sweet, heavy, limited hop)...so I gotta say the Belmont Station employee was right on to comparing it to (English style) Arctic Devil. Good quality for a 'budget' Barleywine. Very Nice sipper. Enjoy! (be it American or English style)
