The Boatyard Brewing Company is proud to have created this special beer to honor slain Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer Eric Zapata and to raise money for the Eric Zapata Memorial Foundation.
In November of 2013, we worked with Kalamazoo Public Safety officers and Eric’s friends to brew our first experimental batch of EZ Ale, an American Wheat Ale. We were very excited about the flavors of the first batch. EZ ale has since become a favorite. The beer was released to the public on April 19th, 2014 at the Kalamazoo Beer Exchange release party to honor Eric, his friends, family and the Eric Zapata Foundation.
Be sure to join us in honoring Eric by raising a glass of EZ Ale!

16 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 7/27/2016. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with amazing retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts the whole glass. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Slight wheat tang. Lingering notes of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance. Touch of lingering hop/spice astringency through the glass, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is a nice American pale wheat ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity wheat yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; despite the increasingly bitter/drying finish. Just a bit too bitter/hoppy, but very well made for the style otherwise. A nicely enjoyable offering.
