Collaboration with Scorpion Brewing out of Owings, MD.
On July 4, 1813, Joshua Barney, an American Revolutionary War naval hero, proposed a plan to the Secretary of the Navy..."The Defense of the Chesapeake Bay". In June of 1814, the flotilla from his plan fought two fierce battles in St Leonard Creek to defend our local waterways. The rest is history!

Ratebeer tasting. Mahogany brown body with a thick, beige head, sticky lacing. Aromas of brown bread, malt, raisins and plums. Medium bodied. Lots of dark fruit showing through as the beer is allowed to warm. Solid.

22 oz bottle into a goblet.
A: Pours a very dark ruby color - I've seen lighter stouts/porters, put it that way. The head is a little over a finger high, with retention that's solid (if not exceptional). A nice ring of lacing is left on the glass. Quite attractive.
S: Like any good brown ale worth its weight in frankincense, it has nice notes of milk chocolate and almonds. Aside from a bit of cream, this is really all I'm getting from the aroma. For a brown ale (a style I'm not huge on), it's done well at least. There are certainly no off notes, that's for sure.
T: At first, there's a subtle note of creamy milk chocolate, mixed with an almondy tone (just like the nose, really). The finish...well, it's not hoppy per se, but it has a respectable bitterness which keeps it well balanced. It certainly doesn't bite the palate. Not that complex, though.
M: Fairly full bodied amongst brown ales. It's still fairly dry, but since the flavor profile is relatively rich, it's not the most drinkable. Carbonation seems to stay backgrounded.
O: As far as brown ales go, this is very well done. It seems richer than most in the style, ergo it's not spectacularly drinkable. If the full flavor had some complexity/depth to go along with it, it could have gotten a great score. Still, it's a solid offering - brown ale fans will eat this up.
