Eagle Creek Brewing "Puff's Magic Dragon Dry Stout"
on tap @ Crystal Beer Parlour, Savannah, GA on 21 December 2014
16 oz. for $5
This is a dry stout at 4.2% abv, not an Imperial Stout at 12%. I'm not sure if they've ever made it in a fuller version, but that's not currently in production. From their website: "A classic kind of Beer hailing from Ireland. Deep, dark, roasty and quaffable. This Beer is packed with complx bittersweet coffee and cocoa flavors. The flaked barley adds a creamy texture to the Beer and aids in the formation of a healthy tan head." In addition they list Maris Otter, pale chocolate, roast barley, and special roast in the grain bill; and calculate 26 IBUs and 125 calories per 12 oz. serving.
Tasting Notes: Black body beneath a short lived tan head - most likely a dirty glass. Solidly roast and chocolatey! Bittersweet dark chocolate and coffee. The flavor follows with additional apple-like fruitiness and a subtle tart component. Ashy roastiness, cold black coffee... more baker's chocolate than bittersweet chocolate. Solid bitterness. More chocolatey than Irish stout, but I'm sure they water to put their own spin on it. About as balanced as it can be with its roasted acidity and ashen edges. Limited grassy/leafy edge of hops as expected. Quite nice!
