Pours jet black with sufficient lacing. An off white head adorns the glass leaving sufficient art-like lacing. The lace on my snifter looks similar to a Lambert conformal conic projection of the USA on my glass..but I digress.
I take a whiff of this and find a subdued surprise. I'm looking for a bit more here. I'm left with a malty bill with hints of maybe some pine tree, mint, and coffee notes. There is also a good heat sting on my nostrils giving me notice of the nearly 10%.
The taste starts with a sweet, black cherry, raisin, plum, laden attack which quickly transitions to a mouthful of coffee, dark chocolate and resin hop bitterness. The overtones throughout the taste are Big Lakes' house taste...something hard to put my finger on but unique to the brewery. The high ABV is well masked and may pass as an easier stout drinker for the advanced advocate of brew.
The feel on my tongue is that of a heavy down blanket. Not too heavy to weight you down but holds enough weight to keep you satisfied and warm.
I enjoy the balance struck with this beer. All of the sweetness up front is matched by bittering and heat in the backend. My level is balanced.
