i was so pumped when i bought this, never saw the large format sockeye bottles with the neck wraps before, love the packaging, and i was sure this would be incredible. its a blend of three different beers, one of which is assuredly a big stout, one likely their barleywine, not sure what else is in the mix, but by the time we opened it up, it had gone off, a pretty well set in bacterial infection making it sharp and thin, rather than the rich and regal experience we were so anxiously anticipating. its dark brownish red in the glass without much head and a lot of viscosity suggesting high residual sugar. the nose smells more like red wine than bourbon barrels, jammy and sort of tannic, and the maple is massive, a little unnatural and very sweet, but real robust. its not unappealing in the nose, but there is an apparent sourness worrying me. the first sip confirms my worst fears, this is tart and acidic and they definitely didnt mean it to be. i should have maybe drank this sooner, but also its not that old and shouldnt be this far gone already. the maple part is still good, again if a little fake to me, and i do get some sturdy whiskey notes, light smoke, vanilla and honey, oak and barrel char, and some deep and complex malt layers from the blend, but the bacterial sourness has eaten this all away into an undrinkable mess, and we are forced to dump the bottle, it definitely isnt a flattering infection of any kind like you sometimes luck out with. this could have been nice, albeit plenty boozy and diabetic, but a fun nightcap type brew for sipping on, cozy and all, instead its just disappointment. a shame, because this had so much promise. anyone else have this issue?
