I saw this beer while shopping for a bottle of wine. I have tried another barrel-aged beer, Kiss of Death. A new brewer started a while back; now Sockeye is creating some tasty beverages. I have served it at 56 degrees in a tulip glass; the pour formed a foamy, half-fingered, off-white head with fair retention. The beer's color is amber, with dark golden hues, transparent, and charts at SRM 14—no visible head after a quick dissipation. The beer's overall appearance is average for this style.
Swirling the glass, I took a few sniffs. I smell cinnamon, toffee, caramel, char, alcohol, light-roasted coffee, vanilla, and earthiness. Nosing the glass again, I notice molasses, brown sugar, light tobacco, lightly roasted malts, bready, and raisins. The beer smells malty-sweet with a hint of cinnamon and wood.
The barrel flavors are light chocolate, light-roasted coffee, molasses, cinnamon, vanilla, and caramel. After a few nips, I notice toffee, a hint of floral notes, light-roasted malts, bready notes, and earthiness.
The mouthfeel is chewy and thick, with a smooth, warm finish. The low carbonation makes it an easy sipper.
Final Impression: I am still on the fence with blonde barleywines. The maltiness in the beer is lacking, but the barrel aging does add depth and character. The Amburana wood imparts a unique essence to the overall beer. It was a wonderful experience; I am glad I had the opportunity.
