On-tap @ Sockeye Bar & Grill. Served in a brandy-style snifter.
A: Jet black for the most part; head is small and fades quickly away.
S: Has a nice porter smell with a clear JD presence as well. Roasted malt and smoke are smoothed out by the barrel, and there are nice notes of sweet caramel, toffee, vanilla, and butterscotch. Fairly soft nose though; this is definitely a 'smaller' BA porter and not a big beer like Black Tuesday or even the Abyss.
T: Follows the nose; regular Power House has a distinct coffee/roast/char/smoke component, but the barrel aging has really smoothed this beer out with lots of sweeter notes of caramel and vanilla. Smooth, with lighter carbonation. Not boozy at all; this thing still feels like its around 6%, just like regular Power House.
MF: Medium/light mouthfeel with a slightly creamy body, lower carbonation...feels like the standard porter, which I didn't like at first but ended up making this an easy drinker.
O: Not every BA dark beer needs to be a 15% monster. This is an easy drinking, lower abv barrel aged porter with a moderate amount of barrel character. Flavors, aromas, and body may seem the little bit 'watery', but for what it is, its good IMO.
