Like your favorite sweater, the perfect beer to fend off the winter chill. I use creamy flaked rye and a hint of caramel malt to give it sweetness and then I balance the sweetness with the spiciness of hand-selected rye malts. It’s only mildly hopped with Zeus and Cascade to give it the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. At 7.6% ABV, it’s a little warmer than summer beers. It’s like comfortable, worn flannel on your palate–smooth and creamy. It’s a beer that implores you to draw a little closer and heap another log on the fire while you share the warmth and company of friends.

16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 11/16/2016. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Pours really thick looking with a slowly cascading head from the rye. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, spicy rye, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of grapefruit, orange zest, chocolate, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready/rye malts and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, spicy rye, toasted biscuit, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of grapefruit, orange zest, chocolate, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy/roast bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, spicy rye, toasted biscuit, nuttiness, light chocolate/citrus herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/rye malts and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness and rye spiciness balance; with zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.6%. Overall this is a delicious American brown/rye ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/rye malts and light-moderate citrus/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/spicy finish. Very rich and complex malts, with solid citrusy/earthy cascade/columbus hop presence. Was hoping for more hops overall, but this is spot on for a maltier brown ale. Definitely a lot of rye malts; but very smooth and not overly spicy on rye flavors. A very enjoyable offering.
