Big Top Brewing Co. "Barrel Aged Imperial Stout"
on tap at the brewery, 3 July 2015
12 oz. glass for $7
Appearance: Opaque black-brown body beneath a wispy surface covering of tan. No real lacing, as might be expected of a beer that arrives without a head. I'll have to give it a little wiggle room as it's clearly got some carbonation to it, and chalk it up to the bartender (for whatever reason).
Aroma: There's wood in the nose, but also a clear note of alcohol (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), and some minor phenolics. Berries, dark skinned fruits, and bittersweet chocolate.
Flavor: As the aroma suggests with some more roastiness that's reminiscent of coffee. Solidly bitter. Dry, alcohol-spritzed and roasty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium leaning towards medium-light in body with a moderate, fine-bubbled and gently bristling carbonation.
Overall: The wood adds a pleasant component to it, but seeing as how the original beer suffers from a little too much noticeable alcohol and some minor phenols it's kind of a waste. Still, it's not bad. As a sipper at the end of a long day it's pleasant enough.
