This may not be a standard West Coast IPA, but it's an interesting and oddly malty brew. The label says it's rated at 84 IBUs which I think yet again proves my point that IBU rating is the most imprecise aspect of brewing. One man's 84 is another's 24.
In any case, this is not very bitter but it has a woodsy, earthy hop flavor. The roast malt catches up again and it leaves a slightly sweet aftertaste. Hints of chestnuts and juniper. It could be an English style IPA, with the fruity notes. Or call it a malty Pale Ale or an Imperial Blonde.
Lovely dark amber color with a big foam in the Pleasant and drinkable grainy brew with an open mind. Think of your favorite lip-blistering IPA and you'll be disappointed. From the 22 oz bottle purchased yesterday at the brewery in Oceanside.

Reviewed from notes, I had a shot or two of this in the Legacy tasting room.
Comes out of the chute a light amber with a lingering tongue-kiss of sweet malts & some kind of hippy burning incense or herbs or something like coming off the surface of the beer. Double check…yup, it’s an IPA. Huh.
Hop Off 76 is an IPA that took a wrong turn. I do detect some very light hoppy bitterness, but it’s buried under a cascade of malty, messy sweetness. A brewer friend once described to me the taste of beer that’s under attenuated, & I’ll bet a pic of this brew is right next to that word in the dictionary (or dictionary.com nowadays, I suppose). I’m very glad I only picked up a few ounces of this one.
Not offensive, but not close to an IPA & there’s really almost nothing to it other than a quick bite of sweetness. Not very good.
