Sigil XI is the latest entry to our ongoing Sigil series, and another epic blend from JC Klecko: a wheat stout aged in bourbon barrels for 18 months, a 24 month rye old ale, and an oat stout aged in rum barrels for 11 months.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like oaky and spicy rum, dark fruit, vanilla, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee.

There’s a nice fruitiness and just a hint of malty caramel flavors that shows the old ale poking through. It’s still mostly stout like, with a good roastiness, and some coffee and chocolate. The rum feels like the strongest barrel character here, interestingly, adding a nice spiced character to it all.

This is medium bodied, not super thick, with very little booziness.

This is a really interesting and well blended beer. This series has been entirely great.

A: Pours a near pitch black color with a tiny head that fades down to a thin cap that leaves no lacing

S: Lots of barrel influence up front along with the roasted malt, caramel, and dark chocolate. Bourbon and rum quite present along with the oak and some rye. Dark fruit and molasses present as well

T: Follows the nose. Starts off with the bourbon, rum, roasted malt, dark chocolate, and light molasses. Picks up some dark fruit, oak, and rye. Vanilla and caramel present. Finishes with lingering barrel character and dark fruit

M: Medium bodied with low-moderate carbonation. A bit of a slick feel overall

O: A very nice blended-barrel stout that takes characteristics from each barrel and mends them together nicely. Makes for a great sipper. Definitely worth checking out

Had on tap. Loving this trend of blended stouts, this one captures the mix of barrel so well, show casing the rye, rum, bourbon, and dark oak in smell and taste. Smell plenty of dark chocolate, leather, earth and light molasses shine through. Taste has lesser chocolate and leather but more char, vanilla, and a kiss of toffee and dark grain. Midnight black pour, no head. Feel is warm and medium bodied but smooth while yielding to the underlying complexity. Wonderful on a cold evening
