Served in a large mug. Deep brown, almost black, with a generous tan head that remained for the entire experience. Aroma of pumpernickel bread and roasted malt. Taste is chicory and dark toffee, with some interesting hickory and smokey notes evident. A tad sweet, a tad bitter. Mouthfeel is oily and well carbonated, with a bit of a bite. I could only have 2 of these before I had to try the IPA. Pretty thick ale. I liked it, though.
