really neat beer here, mixed fermentation and funky and sour and interesting, aged in sherry casks which is way cool for something like this, strong and wintery, elements of flanders red and oud bruin to this, mature, very acidic, but very good. beautiful deep red color with some glow, almost looks fruited, decent little off white head on this, fine carbonation for what it is, strong, old, and sour, all things that can work against head retention. the aroma on this is red and port wine, fig and leather, red wine vinegar, some neat bretty funk but its behind the acid, light smoke, chestnut, and wood, to me quite autumnal and warming, the alcohol is there too, and there is some nice malt depth, nuances of peat, raisin, bread pudding, and toffee, really nice, but the sourness is indeed pretty intense. the flavor is similar to me, beautiful grain complexity from hazelnut to almond to date sugar and even scotch, there is dried cherry and perhaps cranberry fruitiness to this, adding to its festive nature and playing into the late onset sourness, acetic and high tone, with some mellowing wood trying to make it smooth, light vanilla there, tobacco, dark leather, basement type bretty funk. the acid thins it some, and it kind of exposes the alcohol, but its unique enough to be cool, fascinating actually. some malt sweetness comes back in the aftertaste, that flanders old world suggestion, small doses at this ph and abv, but lovely anyway. the sherry is a factor, but mostly later, when its warmed and off gassed some, and its got cool oxidation and wood, its earthy and sharp at the same time, boozy, notes of white balsamic, cardboard, and even mushroom there, and the complexity really is great. overall a fun and unique beer, unlike many ive had before, super cool stuff.
