This American-style Bock is a recreation of Christian Huerich's Senate Bock, originally released as a seasonal lager in Washington DC during the 1930s and 40s. German specialty malts provide flavors of toasted bread crust and caramel, with a noble hop aroma. This beer is brewed in collaboration with the Heurich House Museum and the Lost Lagers team.

On tap:
Definitely malt-forward, but on a lighter and drier body, which I enjoy. On the palate: toasted medium-dark bread, a little bit of unsweetened apple butter follows, and finally some lightly fruited bitterness with a hint of minerality. Nose is more toasty and less fruity. Look is clear copper-tinged dark amber, with a revivable froth that provides temporary lacing.

Right Proper Brewing Co. "Senate Bock Beer"
12 fl. oz. can seemingly without production codes or freshness dating
$3.29 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: Firstly, regarding the name of the beer it appears that this is a revived brand, The Christian Heurich Brewing Company, and that their beer was labeled as the "Senate Bock Beer". Yep, it mentions that on the label and that makes sense as it's just 5.4% ABV. It's poured a clear light brown body beneath a finger's width of creamy and slightly yellowed off-white foam. The aroma is malty, caramelish, and slightly metallic. Odd. Is that metallic character in the taste as well... unfortunately yes, however it's not so bad that it completely distracts. The rest remains malty, bready, nutty, toasty, and caramelish. It's not dark caramel but more of a golden and medium caramel blend. Some apple-like fruitiness, and some leafy hops round it out. A median bitterness balances it and dries it in the finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied and smooth across the tongue. This could probably be a very nice beer except for the metallic character, and without any kind of freshness dating I'm going to have to take that into consideration in scoring it.

Poured the can into a Nonic, a medium amber/Mahogany colored pour with a foamy beige head that goes thin but hangs around, and leaves random lacing.
Malt forward on the nose and palate, pleasant caramelization, notes of black tea, an enjoyable hops profile and bitterness, lots of flavor. The mouthfeel is soft, the finish is smooth with enjoyable carbonation and a slight tickle on the tongue.
A very nice Bock, flavorful and easy drinking.

From the 12 oz can, it pours a brownish color with a modest off=1hite head that reduces to a thin ring. Some lacing. The nose gets some faint scents of malt. The mouth gets a whack of burnt malt, with some roasted maltiness after. A slight bitterness is also present. Aftertaste is black malts on the tongue.

Good Bock Beer. Based on a recipe from a brewer that was active in the 1930's and 40's. Poured from a 12 oz. can into a pint glass, this beer features a hazy dark amber color and a bubbly cream colored/antique white head that fades quickly. Minimal lacing. Aroma and taste include bready malt and a touch of caramel. There is a bit of sweetness to the malt and if there is any hoppiness present, it just serves to cut the sweetness a bit. Mouthfeel is light with a malty smoothness. Overall very enjoyable.
