Had on tap at the brewery.
On arrival a nice light khaki, fine 1 finger head was present that recedes to a dense rim and covering over a couple minutes. Body is dark, at first it looks like some dark red light shines through, but this is almost black. No lacing.
Aroma is right off the bat quite phenolic with a touch of banany Ester peeking through. Definitely surprisingly fruity. A dark toast comes through the yeast revealing some dark bready malts.
Taste is like a cross between your standard weizenbock and a porter. This is sweet and the fruity phenols are balanced by some roasty toasty malts. Almost a cocoa powder flavor cut with malty sweetness comes through. Slightly bitter but not a lot of hop going on. There is a slight plumminess right on the front that some may not enjoy, but this is an interesting beer, if not a bit bold.
This is extraordinarily smooth for a beer as big as this one. Long finish but surprisingly dry and lacks much of any alcohol character.
Overall this beer is unique and quite interesting, and probably the darkest weizenbock I've seen or tasted. Despite that it's easy to put down and surprisingly enjoyable.
