The traditional Rauchbier lager style hails from Bamberg Germany. The name Buchenrauch literally means "beech smoke," which pays homage to the time honored tradition of smoking the malt over beech wood to create the signature smooth smokiness. Mahogany in color and rich in flavors of campfire smoke and crusty bread. Buchenrauch is crisp and savory. The lager yeast and cold aging provide smooth drinkability, yielding a beer perfectly suited for pairing with grilled meats, assertive cheeses, and the great outdoors.

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours deep red with a nice off white head. Smells of smokey caramel and dark grain. Tastes of fire roasted grain, nice and refreshing. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a good beer.

Half at taproom. Medium brown pour, fine skin of head. Smoky aroma, nutty, hint of sweetness. Toasty, smoky flavor, campfire, woody, light sweetness. Solid rauch.

I purchased this beer as part of a larger assortment, even though in my limited experience with the style, I have found I don't particularly enjoy it. The beer has a nice head, and a pleasant amber color, but right off the bat, the smokiness pretty much dominates the proceedings. I definitely detected the campfire notes in the aroma, but there was also a cured meat presence as well. The bacon flavor really came across in the taste, and I have to say I did not enjoy it. Overall, I did not like this beer, but in fairness, I realize rauchbier is a style I will definitely avoid in the future.

Moderate smokiness that is NOT bacon-like. Campfire would be a good way to describe it. I get a little bit of sweetness that works very well with the smoke, malt and hops. Well done!

From the can, it pours a clear slightly reddish brown color (mahogany?) with a modest off-white head that reduces to a nice ring. Smoke gets in your nose. Taste is smoky over a solid roasted malt base. Decent.

A: crystal clear; mahogany in color; 1 finger finely pored tan head that receded to a wispy cap with a thick collar; very nice lacing;

S: quite aromatic; smoke and bacon;

T: smoke and bacon balanced up front; from the middle through the finish, it's bacon with smoke in the background;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: really good;

Opaque brown body with two fingers of khaki foam. Huge aromas of bacon and campfire, while toasted caramel, malt and crusty bread support. Taste has more integration with the smoke and wood into the malt flavors, hints of tree root and wet leaves in the background. Really nice balance yet potent and pervasive smokiness. More new world due to lighter body and light sweet tones, but seamlessly done.

Very smoky. Like BBQ served as a beer. Decent, tasty.
Pours red amber with a 1" beige head. Aroma earthy/resinous/smoky. Taste is smoky, bacon and a bit sweet. Feel is decent, smooth and good feel. Overall, it's an unusual brew that's enjoyable to try.
