Growler fill from the taproom. DFH Tulip.
A: Pours a deep amber/copper with one finger of off-white to sandy head. Lots of visible carbonation. No lacing to speak of, and head retention was spotty at best.
S: even straight out of the fridge I get loads of the sweet, caramel malt, fruity esters, and English hop aroma I was hoping I’d find.
T: follows the aroma perfectly. Sweet, malty, estery/floral arrival. Funky citrus malt middle. Dank, bitter, earthy end. Damn, that’s perfect.
M: hefty feel in the mouth, but quite well attenuated and finishes bitter and clean. Carbonation is less intense than it appears. Surprisingly crisp for the style; I would have expected it to be fluffier and more ale-like. This is kind of lagerish in texture.
O: this is a really well executed ESB. Officially, the brewery is calling it an English pale ale now; the last two years it was called an ESB and I never got around to drinking it. That is a shame because I love it and heartily endorse it. I like this even better than their old-school APA, Ridge Trail, and better than Land Grant’s Pub Ale, which is similar but lower ABV. Much better texture than the Smokehouse ESB. The only Ohio ESB I’d say was better was MadTree’s Mechanic, and Mt. Carmel Harvest (but that’s 8%, it doesn’t count). A must-try for English ale fans in Ohio.
