This beer's name pays homage to the westward migration of olde-world brewing traditions from Europe to America. It also highlights the very literal westward expansion of our sour barrel program as it grows each year. In 2016 we had 4 barrels, and now in 2018 we have over 75! For 14 months, this beer fermented and aged in a single Italian marsala wine puncheon from Sicily. Westward Expansion is a complex sour ale with a deep amber color and flavors of French oak, almond, sweet wine, and ripe apricot.

750 ml corked and caged bottle, packaged on AUG 15, 2019. Served in a Wolf's Ridge chalice, the beer pours a mostly clear dark gold color with about an inch and a half white head that fizzled away somewhat quickly. There's a small amount of lacing. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells like apricots, oak, stonefruit, green apple, citrus peel and some bready malt. For the most part I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some earthy and white grape/wine flavors. Good amount of sourness! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating and easy to drink with a good amount of soft carbonation. I really liked this sour ale a lot, Wolf's Ridge did a great job with this one. Definitely recommended if you come across some, purchased this bottle at the taproom a few months back.
