Inspired by the myth of Belsnickel, our pumpernickel lager is the perfect treat on a cold winter night. Smooth yet warming with hints of warm dark bread and rye. Are you impish or admirable? This lager is easy drinking but just strong enough to beg the question, "Cheer or fear?" Impish indeed!

From the 12 oz can in a snifter. This nice brew pours a dark ruby
highlighted blackish brown with a nice head of kahki foam that settles
to a thick ring and layer with excellent lacing. Nose of dark breaded
malts, moderate smoke and char, dark bakers chocolate, and dark coffee
touches. Flavors follow the nose with dark breaded malts akin to pumpernickel,
char and smoke with a semisweet chocolate and moderate coffee note touched
with caramel and herbal hops. Nice mouth feel; medium body, medium light
carbonation that is nicely effervescent, and a roasted balanced malt finish
laced with char and roast amongst herbal hops and caramel.

Overall, nicely balanced and approachable.

Cheers

16 oz can, poured into a willi becher at ~40 degrees F.

L: Pours a deep, dark, clear mahogany red-brown, and forms a few fingers of off-white head with good retention.

S: Dark bread, toffee, peaty mulch. A tinge of stale coffee, and something vaguely cocoa-like.

T: Dark bread indeed, front and center, with a softly smoky peat rounding out the edges. Subtle coffee notes waft through the backdrop, and there's something reminiscent of dark toffee and raisins.

F: Medium, smooth, and quaffable.

O: I wasn't expecting a schwarzbier under a "winter lager" label, but I am pleasantly surprised. This is tasty.

Canned on 10/12/21. 12oz can poured into a tulip.

Pours a dark mahogany with ruby hues; creamy light khaki head that fades leaving nice retention and sticky lacing.

The aromas have hints of cocoa and marshmallows. Hints of coffee and smoke. Malts are there.

The flavors follow the nose. More cocoa and marshmallows. More hints of coffee. More hints of smoke and ash. Some caramel and toffee in the mix. Some pumpernickel toast to round things out. Moderate to low bitterness. Subtle sweetness. Solid malt backbone. Alcohol goes unnoticed.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's extremely fluffy. It's smooth and easy to drink.

This is a pretty solid dark lager. It's perfect for the colder weather. I like it.

I got a can of this beer from my advent pack that I bought from my local beer store just around the corner. It poured a clear dark mahogany with off white head that is leaving some lace. The scent had dark bread notes and xmas spice. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with pumpernickel bread base and roast highlights. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a very good beer.
