Had this on 2016-03-04 in Columbia, PA at the brewery on-tap and subsequently that evening from a fresh growler.
A - Clear, pale gold with a 1.5-finger white head and very nice lace.
S - Lightly roasted grain with some earthy/peaty spice and a touch of apple cider. The aroma isn't strong but it's nice.
T - Pretty true to the aroma at first with the grain, spice and mild cider flavors giving way to a more aggressive pepper and hop bitter finish. Even so, it's pretty balanced. The house malt flavor is part of this beer's appeal but it is more muted than in some of the beers. I'm enjoying the lighter malt hand in this brew melded with the cider, pepper and hop bite. Let me be clear, the cider flavor I'm referring to is not green apple (acetaldehyde) but rather the inviting flavor of fresh-pressed cider perhaps briefly stirred with a cinnamon stick. It's quite nice but it surely isn't the predominant flavor. The beer gained complexity as it warmed and towards the end of the glass I started tasting a bit of semi-sweet chocolate and maybe even some anise.
M - Light-medium body and medium carbonation. Dangerously quaffable for a 6% brew.
O - A very interesting beer and one that I've quite enjoyed today. Thumbs up to the chefs.
