Bottle-conditioned, 500ml brown bottle, BBE Nov 2006. The label says: "Charged with Hersbrucker Hops". Served cool in a goblet.
A: dark straw hued, relatively nice clarity, coming with a fluffy white head dissipating just slowly; moderately-carbonated, with sparse big bubbles struggling out of the control of gravity.
S: interestingly blended nose, a bit like a weak lager--at first the Hersbrucker hop note is pronounced, yet weakening dramatically, and replaced by a light, white-chocolate like malty note, and a slightly sharp sweetish note of artificial flowery flavouring(?) with some sourness... Not very successful experiment with the German hops is it?
T&M: sharply-textured pale malt maltiness, with faint trace of lager-hops and a weird sour, slightly citrussy fruitiness at the back with a faintly floral hint; leaving not much to play with in the aftertaste, though the aftertaste is indeed relatively clean... but it's not something to be proud of being an ale, I think! Quite flat and watery on the mouthfeel, and the initially apparent fizziness is certainly absent on the palate.
D: a disappointing ale, pale in aroma, flavour and lack of body. A failed experiment from the Iceni brewery, I must say. Not impressed.
Other notes: Surprisingly in the second pour I accidentally allow more yeasty sediments to make my pint a cloudy one, and it tastes much more tasty, if not a totally transformed pint--with more body and a richer hoppy entry, with tea-leaves mingling better with the citrussy note. Maybe it's meant to be served cloudy?
