Glasstown Brewing Co. "Danky JR IPA"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Everytime I go to Total Wine I end up rushing through the beers I've bought because I don't know how old they are. Fortunately they had a lot of Glasstown on hand so maybe they're moving it more quickly. Anyway, Danky Jr. has poured a very hazy deep golden body beneath a massive head of slightly off-white foam. Let's call it "antique white". The aroma is pretty good so I'm assuming it is fresh. It's got some "dankness" to it as well as a little bit of otherwise herbal character, but it's also fruity. I'm getting passionfruit, lime, orange, and apple. There's some malt in there I'm sure but it doesn't really stand out. On to the tasting then... I'm finding some spiciness along with the "dankness", or is that just pine? It's not as fruity as I thought it would be given the aroma but that's acceptable. It's got a solid bitterness to it and it finishes dry, spicy, and herbal. It a little weird in all honesty. It lingers with a kind of Altoids mint thing going on except that it's not really mint-like. It's like Vick's Vapor rub or something - no, wait, it's like eucalyptus. Odd. Don't take that too seriously though, it's not going to knock you down, and I'm guessing that most people won't even notice it. It's got a very dry finish to it though. So what else? Medium leaning towards medium-light in body and crisp in the mouth. The head held up OK and left some lacing behind but not much. Ohhh, I just picked up my glass and noticed that there's a lot of visible particulate in suspension. I can see that there's also a pretty good pile of it resting on the bottom. I'm not really sure what to make of that. So what to say about this? It's unusual. I like the aroma but the taste doesn't really rate as well. It's basically a more bitter pale ale with more late hops. In fact, I wonder if they're picking up more bitterness from their late hopping than they expect based on their calculations. I don't think it's bad but I don't think it's great.

A: Medium tangerine orange with a rapid and dense effervesce. A strong capping, pearl white is soapy and porous, but fairly strong in standing. Slight haziness at first. Weak and small spotty lacing.
S: Tart and juicy fresh grapefruit, Small bit of onion grass, as well lemon. A bit of skunky herb, and oranges that finishes with some wet grassiness.
T: Dank grapefruit, bitter orange, that was tart and dry with a flowery citrus bite. Old musky hops, some onion grassiness and old lemon peel.
M: Malty, bready, and very dry and bitter mouthful. Nothing exciting.
O: Dank, strongly hopped, but I didn't agree with the flavor which was very mundane. Musky and bittering, muddled flavor. Had high hops per style and name, but this tasted tired, old, bitter, musky and had few bright points. Unexciting drinkability factor. pass. No freshness date.

First time having this beer, as I traded for it at the same time that I obtained the Dainky Kong. As it turned out, this was indeed a Junior compared to that beer as it was much more mellow, easygoing, and less notable when it came to it's range of flavor...
The pour to this might have been this beer's best aspect as like it's predecessor that I had, it was golden, radiant, and topped off with a voluminous head. That settled fairly quickly as the lacing left behind was sparse and there was a bit of sediment left at the bottom of the liquid but to be fair, this can wasn't dated! Just a bit of rocky, golden bubbles lingered for the duration of my session as the bubbles never quite settled down. Lots of tangerine pith, pine needles, and lemon in the relatively muted nose as the taste also contained those to the same degree. Once again, floral notes and potpourri came into the mix but they were so muted that it was quite hard to discern them this time around. Lots of bite to the malt but overall, this was a thinner and less potent beer that felt more like an American Pale Ale more than anything else...
That was partially because of the alcohol - yes, it was lower than in the previous beer that I had and nearly impossible to feel on any of the senses. No, this wasn't bad but it was unmemorable and a "light" version of Glasstown's more popular offering. Worth a go once to kick back with but this didn't impress me in any way when all was said and done.
