On draught at the brewery. It pours a ruby-amber color with a thin, khaki head and a creamy sheen of lacing inside the glass. The nose is rather subdued with sweet malt, cherry, coffee, brown sugar, and just a whiff of bourbon. The taste opens with sweet malt, candied cherry, and oak. It's tangy. The bourbon is very subtle and it has a slightly bitter, hoppy finish. The flavors open up as the glass warms. This ale is full-bodied with moderate carbonation, and a warming 8.5% ABV that seems higher. Overall, this is an understated Red Ale. The barrel notes enhance the flavor but do not distract. While it's good I was hoping for something more memorable.
