Aptly named, Stout One was our first venture as a brewing company. The combination of malts, roasted barley, and rolled oats builds the foundation of what a stout should be – chocolaty, sweet, smoky, full-bodied. The conversion from simple to complex begins with earthy Fuggles hops and California Ale yeast accentuation. Charred whiskey oak and full Madagascar vanilla beans complete the ascension from earthy to ethereal, and adds the final assurance Stout One (and Four Saints Brewing Company) was meant to be.

Pours jet black with a frothy beige head.
My untrained nose picks up coffee and chocolate.
Coffee and chocolate dominate the taste, chocolate first then coffee on the back end.
Medium bodied mouth feel, kinda roasty.
Coffee dominates the immediate aftertaste, but as it mellows, chocolate comes in.
Overall, an excellent example of what I love in a stout.
Rates a 9.45 out of 10 on the would you like to sit down with a 12-pack of this brew scale

Came in a standard pint pitch black with a thinner deep beige head that settles nicely into a frothy mass.Heavy roast, bitter chocolate, and a hint of dark brown sugar in the nose, heavy roast.Starts out roasted on the palate then a nice molasses-like sweetness comes into play along with bitter chocolate, more drying earthiness in the finish.Alot of good stuff packed into a "smaller" stout, like roasted elements.

Enjoyed a shaker pint of this outstanding stout at Jugghead's bottle shop in Winston Salem. Visited the venue with Mom, Dad and Bethany on a trip to pick up the kids after their summer in NC.

Appearance: Arrives looking impressive, with a thick tan head covers the dark brown liquid; a decent amount of foam sticks to the glass
Smell: Roasty chocolate tones with an undertone of coffee
Taste: Roast and chocolate elements lead off, with the chocolate flavors building; some coffee appears, after the swallow, but the chocolate aspect dominates the finish; rather dry, overall, however
Mouthfeel: Medium body with gentle carbonation; nice and creamy
Overall: A nice, straightforward example of the style
