Bud Hedrick was a man that made a difference and mattered to a lot of people. Bud, and his family, decided to take a shot and give a startup brewery a chance in Asheboro, a town that was dry for 50+ years. He didn't see a brewery as a way to degenerate a community. Rather, through his experiences in World War II in Germany, he saw how a brewery can bring a community together and raise it up. He understood that a city without a brewery was almost like a room without books. Bud passed away in late 2019. In his honor, we have rechristened our German Wheat Ale as Hedrick's Hefeweizen German Wheat Ale and our good friend, and his neighbor, Rich Powell, created a fine commemorative can label. You can watch Rich talk about the label design here: http://bit.ly/2SuqYCv.
The German Hefeweizen exemplifies quite a dichotomy in craft beer. This style demonstrates that not all is as it seems. The lightness in color masks the intensity of the flavor. The esters and clove aromas and flavors accentuate that you cannot judge a beer by its color alone.
8 IBU

On tap at a taproom. Pours like a good weizen. Cloudy and good head. Aroma is diacetyl at first; buttery popcorn, a fault for this style of beer (may just be this keg). Aroma is extremely muted for a hefeweizen after the diacetyl dissipates. Faint hint of hefe cloves and banana, more clove but a bit more tart than clove?
Taste is alright. This is no Live Oak, Tucker Brewing Company (which is, in my opinion, the best hefeweizen made in the US), or Weiheistephaner hefe. Low hop bitterness, typical for the style. I appreciate the lower hop bitterness as I've had some other hefeweizens that were way too bitter. There's not really any noticeable hefe esters or phenols, sadly. Extremely faint banana bread notes. Feel is good for the style, brightly carbonated with a good mouthfeel.
Overall, a serviceable hefeweizen. Definitely nothing to write home about, but if it's the only wheat beer available, it's better than nothing.

One tap at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza Greensboro. Pours moderate hazy golden yellow color with a minimal head and spotty lacing. Light streaming carbonation. Muted standard hefeweizen aromas. Flavors of big banana, bubblegum, clove, pear, apple, peppercorn, wheat, cracker, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light to medium herbal, grassy bitterness, yeast spiciness, and wheat tang/tartness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation and light body. Creamy/grainy malts and some sticky hops. Increasing bitter/spicy dryness after the finish. Fairly crisp. Refreshing. No cloying/astringent flavors. Flavorful for the ABV. Spot on base style example. Well made.
