Tasted on draught at the Crown, an organic gastro-pub nr. the Victoria Park, East London. As the pint was poured, it was so cloudy that I couldn't help asking the barman whether it was meant to be like that? His answer was that coz the beer doesn't use any fining in order to be 100% organic, so it comes naturally cloudy. But after I checked with Pitfield brewery' staff, they mentioned that it should be relatively clear if the pub had allowed the barrel to settle for three to four days... Well, apparently the cellarman at this pub didn't wait that long!
A: cloudy, scrumpy jack cider colour, with very fine carbonation and little beer head.
S: mildly floral, pear-blossom, lightly tropical fruitiness and candyish malts, with a touch of stronger fruit esters at the back. But overall the nose is too timid and ill-structured...
T: tangy and semi-sweet, bready pale maltiness in the foreground, with apple-ish and deeply-scented flowery flavour in the background; leading to a flow of very mild bitterness and hops. in the end a slightly tangy fruity mouthfeel is left b/w the teeth~~
M&D: overall the flavour is slightly off-balance and too timid to be right, and the mouthfeel is thin and overly light-bodied. I wonder if the fining issue is the key point here, or it could well be that it's past its prime and the barman just made up the fining thing to keep the barrel going? I'll never know, coz I might not be motivated to try it on draught again...
