One of the Pitfield Brewery's organic range, bottle-conditioned in a 500ml brown glass bottle. "BBE 1006 GYLE 151"(??). Served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.
A: hazy light copper-ish colour, extremely fizzy and lively, supporting a thick, fluffy/spongey white beer head which slowly settles to a roughly 1cm thick layer of foam sustaining throughout the drink. Actually this is one of the highest carbonated British bottle-conditioned beers I've ever seen...
S: very mild, bready maltiness mingling with a lightly sweet floral-hoppy note, with a touch of unidentifiable spice and trace of fresh cane-sugar juice; some hints of resins can be picked up here and there, but overall the aroma is quite understated and quietly hoppy.
T: home-brew like rough yeastiness prevails on the palate from the first second onwards... backed by raw-nutty malts, damp wood, and lightly pineapple-ish sour yeasty flavour attached to the tongue; slightly sour-sweet fruitiness and dryish bitterness of Fuggles-like hops lingers at the back of the palate, with a slight tannic touch and a bitter-sweet malty overtone hovering~~ As it warms, a lovely root-herb like bitter taste slowly develops in the background.
M: the mouthfeel is just what I expect from the highly gassy appearance--lively alright, but overly fizzy for this type of beer (bitter); as the bottle-conditioned yeasts do not settle seamlessly into the flavour, the overall body is off-balance and rather thin IMO.
D: the Pitfield Brewery has produced some fantastic real ales, but this bottle again shows that their stuffs are best enjoyed on cask... although, compared with bottle-conditioned EKG, this one is apparently more successful to keep some goodies in the bottles~~ Hope they'll keep on improving their techniques all the time.
