two 12 oz. bottles poured into 24 oz. glass mug — Moon Tower Inn mug if you're scoring at home
(9/3/19 bottled date printed on neck of bottle)

L: clear dark orange/copper, loads of red in it, topped by thick head of offwhite/beige foam over 1.5 inches tall; almost no sticking or lacing but keeps a thick collar of beige foam and most of a skin

S: roasted peach, roasted apricot, molasses ... very bready and as bread-malt sweet as a Vienna lager; if you dig deep for it, there's a pinch of earthy hops in the background, but the sweeter malt aromas are the main show

T: much, much hoppier than the aroma, maybe even a bit of burnt-malt flavor contributing to the earthy flavor; still plenty of malt flavor but not as sweet as the aroma, burnt peaches, burnt apricots, charred peach/apricot kolache; loads and loads of the copper penny flavor found in many darker Oktoberfests, toes the line on becoming medicinal; doesn't sweeten much as it warms ... the hops/yeast/alcohol earthy bitterness dominates throughout

F: pure joy ... good heft to this midweight with plenty of carbonation to both lighten the load and fill the mouth

O: if it tasted like it smelled, it'd be world class; as it is, I'm not complaining ... the extra bitter/earthy flavor stays on the good side of the medicinal line by just enough; not an Oktoberfest I'll seek out again, but as a fan of the style, the 6-pack was worth grabbing

AGING NOTE: This beer gets MUCH better with some age. I had one on Nov. 10, about three weeks after the original review, and the malt is alive and sweetening the flavor tremendously. My bet is it can handle 3-4 months of age and taste very good.

Serving: 12 oz bottle poured into a Saint Arnold tulip pint glass.

Appearance: Clear, dark orange amber. Moderate frothy head and minimal lacing.

Smell: Lightly toasted grains, a bit of yeast and spice.

Taste: Toasty malt and relatively sweet (caramel, dried fruits?). A bit of hop spice and bitterness and hints of alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Medium, smooth body with moderate carbonation.

Overall: Drinkable with a nice malty body, but a bit too sweet as with some of Saint Arnold's other ale offerings.

I tried this at Hopdoddy burger joint in Southlake, TX. It poured a clear amber with white head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had sweet malt. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with sweet malt base. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a decent beer

Ok. I had this beer out of the bottle and straight out of the fridge the other day while watching football and was wholly unimpressed. This time I let it warm while I ate my dinner and poured it into a pint glass.

A- A lighter orange color than other Marzens I've had. Good carbonation but little head when poured into pint glass. (This is a recurring theme in my posts so maybe it's the fall crop of beers or maybe there's soap or hardwater deposits on my glasses. I don't know.)

S- I found the smell pleasantly sweet and even a bit grainy (not malty, but grainy). Overall, fairly nice.

T- As I mentioned, I was ready for the beer to underwhelm and was delighted when it didn't. It gave me a strong malt flavor followed by a sweetness that was dry and faintly apricot-y. Good stuff.

D- Light and quaffable. A good clean finish with just the slightest grain aftertaste.

O- I like it, but don't love it. However, it was better than the S.A. Oktoberfest I had recently which is saying something since it was one of my faves last season.

Give it a try.
