500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Dark brown pour with a red-orange hue and good clarity. It is just barely opaque due to the darker shade of it. A semi-vigorous pour raises three fingers of billowing cream-colored head. Retention is outstanding, and lacing stubbornly clings to the glass in thick chunks

S: Malt base of toasted scones, toffee, and dark caramel. Extra crusty bread. A little bit of fig and fruit cake. Whiff of alcohol and some vinous esters. Raspberry jam and cabernet. Earthy hops pull through as it warms, bringing some bark, tobacco, and leafiness.

T: Irish soda bread with raisins comes and goes quickly. Deeper and richer malt notes quickly gain control. Extra crusty bread, toasted scones, dark caramel, brown cocoa powder, nutty toffee. Quick but brusque brush of alcohol. The underlying cab/raspberry jam notes that the nose suggested are here, but more subtle. Earthy hops bring pine and bark with a bit of grapefruit rind. Finish is all drying crust, toasted nuts, and brown cocoa.

M: Thick and chewy mouthfeel, but drying and without much of any syrupy dextrin. It is highly drinkable for its size. Carbonation is lively with a firm lift and scrub.

O: This is pretty great, and a classic and textbook American Barleywine. It does not stand out immediately as being particularly flashy or unique, but it is special in that it is executed and fermented so well. Its brawn is apparent but understated, and it is ridiculously drinkable for what it is. I would love to see beers like this become available more often again, and I think this beer in particular could lend itself well to varying barrel aging treatments.

Enjoying from a 0.5l bottle scored 8 days ago at Trib, for $13.99.... Bottle notes "A Tribute to Brad Mott".... the brother of Master-brewer Tod Mott who passed away a couple of years ago....

Into a Smutty sniftah... it's a clear, beauteous ruby-garnet color.... Up top sits a somewhat thin layer of beige foam, creamy and fine with a bit of rockyness. Leaves a small touch of lacing on the glass. Aroma has a little caramel and toffee, plus some rindy hop action. Has a smooth feel going down to accompany a medium to medium-plus body.

Flavor starts off with more caramel and toffee, suggesting an English-style Barleywine. But shortly thereafter the hopping takes over... has rindy, pithy, resiny hop action attacking the palate! That hopping linger nicely in the finish... reminds me a bit of Circular from Spyglass... Nicely done, Tod! Cheers!
