Beautiful dark russet-tinged amber with a nice foam in the Ommegang chalice. It's like a red ale with more clarity. Nose of caramel and a touch of fruit.

Warm and malty flavor to start. Some hop flavors and flowery notes. Some roasted malt. A hint of grapes, biscuits, Wheaties. Eventually the drying Belgian effect evaporates the malty sweetness, but that's not overdone either. Bitterish aftertaste, though IBUs are rated at just 28 as appropriate to the style.

An unpretentious and well-made Belgian-style ale, and a satisfying quaff. The carbonation is not overdone and the aftertaste of toasted grain and yeast is quite pleasant. From the 32 oz growler purchased at the brewery restaurant in Temecula.
