Spiced Coconut Porter from Garage. Received on 21/2/21, cost $ 8.17 (Including shipping) for a 12 oz can ($ 0.636/oz) from Craftshack, San Diego, CA. Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 12/3/21. Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Marked on upper rim of can “BBD 05/06/21 (I think – smudged) PORTER J20110”. Served at 48.7 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 53.7 degrees.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Deep amber (SRM 15), slight haze.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), opaque. When rear-lite, the entire glass appears amber brown and slightly hazy.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.5 cm, aggressive center pour), desert sand, high density, average retention, leaving a six mm ragged crown topped by torn curtain lacing, and a thick partial cap. Many isolated three-dimensional pieces of foam remain on the glass above the crown.
Lacing – Fair. Wide band of mostly tiny bubbles with multiple windows. See also above.
Aroma – 4 – Primarily light cocoa with some coconut. No hops, no yeast, no advertised ginger, or vanilla.
Flavor – 3.25 – Begins slightly bitter from hops, slight cocoa flavor. No hop flavor, no yeast, initially no ginger, no cinnamon, no coconut, no “spice”. As it warms to the final temperature, ginger modestly appears. No alcohol (6.4 % ABV, as marked on container) taste or aroma. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 3 – Thin, watery, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Very imaginative brew – spice flavors and molasses seem mostly to be imaginary.
