At the BVB taproom. HOLY SMOKES! This is one BIG tasty brew! Opaque near-black in the glass, creamy dark brown head. Wonderful aroma of vanilla and roasted grain and of course, bourbon. To be honest, I have had some RIS that was an actual chore to finish because they are so over the top burnt/bitter tasting. No chance with that happening with this beer...it's just flat yummy. Make no mistake, there is plenty of bourbon flavor here but it is not as whisky-ish as Founders KBS, for example which sometimes tastes like it has a shot of bourbon in every glass. This one came out perfect (for me) with more woody, vanilla notes. I like my IPAs with just enough malt backbone to hang a bunch of hops flavors on but don't let the malt even think about dominating. I want the exact opposite in a stout...give me just enough hops to keep it from being syrupy and then pour in the malt. That's what I get from this brew. Ya gotta try this one!
