After seeing through the haze, its only logical to return to more traditional, more somber, and more solid roots. Bottle Logic brings their logic to the table of Imperial IPA with an old school balance along with some tricks that they learned through all that fog.

Ocularity leaps right out with a reasonably hazy, moderately bright amber golden pour. As its foamy cap rises, a billowing scent of citrus, tropical fruit, herb and melon arises. Sweeter though to start, the early palate impressions are sweet with bread crust, toast, light nuttiness and faint caramel is a subtle granola way.

With the quickly growing hops, the middle palate opens up with a juicy and radiant fruit display just as the malts start to slowly fade. Ripe red grapefruit, tangerine and lemon take the citrusy flavors and roll in more tropical influences from a tropical blend of pineapple, mango and passionfruit. With hints of peach and lime radiating late, the final flavors turn decidedly bitter with peppery pine, dank grasses and fresh grass clippings.

Full bodied but still with an element of crispness and refreshment, Ocularity finishes malty-dry with a bitter grip on the gullet. A long aftertaste of cannabis, pine resins and muddled fruit peels are sure to keep the old school hop heads very happy.

Pours extra golden if that is a thing. Head was not there, not much carbonation. Head could not be created. Nose was dank, not much more that I can say about it.Taste was typical IPA. This was not a great IPA nor a bad IPA. It was just average.

L: amber clear not much head. Lacing.
S: Caramel, honey, tree sap.
T: caramel, honey, pine, citrus, Slightly nutty, juniper berries, slightly bitter, slightly boozy,
F: Medium, dry.
Overall: Malt dominant, Hops expressed as a pinesap citrus, with some nutty bark. The booze presence shouldn’t be there at this abv. Agree with other reviews, not bad but not impressive.

 

 

Kind of like a Danielle Steele novel, this one is a bit over the top and sappy. It’s a weird predicament, you know? How does a brewery make world class Stouts, yet they can’t brew a great IPA to save their life? It’s like a soiled dove that’s good at, you know, but isn’t good at...you know. You know?

And this beer right here, Ocularity, is exactly that. I’m down for the romp, but I’ve definitely had better.

Nice imperial IPA with big fruit flavors and a good hit of malt sweetness, just not as outstanding as their Double Actuator imperial IPA. Pours a very nice looking pale yellow-orange color with loads of rocky white head and lingering lacing that lasts and lasts. Smells of lots of fruity hops, grapefruit, orange, lemon, pineapple, mango. Also some faint floral hops and malt. Tastes similarly, but there’s a fair amount of malt sweetness in the finish and the hops tended to get a little muddled on the palate. Smooth, mild mouthfeel, not too sticky, good carbonation. Enjoyable and the higher ABV was fairly well-hidden, just not as outstanding as this brewery’s other offerings.

 

 

From a 22oz bottle picked at Bottlecraft in San Diego. Poured into snifter.
Look: poured pale gold with a 1/2" off white head with average retention. 1/4" remains at all times. Minimal lacing observed. Beer is not 100% clear but not NE hazy. Just a bit of cloudiness.
Smell: earthy yeast combined with strong piney, citrusy and tropical fruit (mango, papaya) aromas.
Taste: its all about the hops here. Bold piney and citrusy (orange mostly) hop flavors and extreme bitterness combined with some honey-like sweetness.
Feel: Medium-full body. Resiny, rich texture. lively carbonation and pronounced astringency. Finishes long with intense bitterness lingering and some alcohol warming present later on as well.
Overall: bold, over-the-top DIPA that was designed for serious hop-heads only! Although I cannot find any real flaws, its just a bit too intense and bitter for my personal liking.
