Bourbon Barrel Aged Coffee & Vanilla Barleywine • 12.4% ABV • This beer debuted at Week of Logic 2024 under the alias “Between Subtle Shading and the Absence of Light,” from the first deciphered section of James Sanborn’s “Kryptos” sculpture at the CIA Headquarters.
With its mix of Morse code, ancient ciphers, and cryptographs, the final message of Sanborn’s sculpture remains elusive. Like the art piece, this liquid invites you to explore its depths like a multi-layered puzzle.
We’ve aged this English-style Barleywine in a selection of Heaven Hill bourbon casks with a combination of vanilla beans from Vanuatu and Comoros, then finished it with Mostra Coffee’s famed ‘Philippines Heritage’ coffee beans for coffee-derived layers of vanilla, baking spice, roasted nuts, and caramel.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. A 2024 release, had 10/26/24.
Pours a brownish copper color, fairly clear, with a brief head and spotty foamy cling. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, some coffee- more as it warms, light bourbon and chocolate. The flavors are similar: vanilla, caramel, malt, some bourbon and coffee, a little chocolate. Smooth, a very good medium body, well carbonated.
A solid effort. Strong vanilla, along with strong caramel notes. The coffee shows best in the aroma but has some impact in the flavor. Has a good enough barrel presence. Overall, it’s really enjoyable.

500ml capped bottle into a BBT snifter.
Pours a dark, nearly pitch black mahogany. Thin layer of bubbles. Thick, oily legs. Nose is heavy on the coffee. Touches of burnt brown sugar, barrel, and sweet vanilla. Beer opens hazelnut, mocha, and heavy on the vanilla. More sips yield mocha, brown sugar, dates, and big barrel presence at the finish. Body is full with low carbonation. Slick and chewy. Long, lingering, hot aftertaste.
Nice. I don't know that the adjuncts add to the experience here though.

Opaque brown body with a tan head. Smells of coffee, caramel, vanilla, barley lead nose, dark chocolate and molasses forward bourbon support. Taste is led by coffee, caramel, vanilla with cocoa, brown sugar, bourbon, and bourbon. Feel is sharper and thinner but plenty boozy and heavy. Not bad at all, maybe pastry barleywines aren’t all bad after all?

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown (but not approaching black) with a very thin layer of head. The nose is actually insane. The toffee and bourbon from the barleywine are clearly detectable, but the coffee punches hard too. It's like they are sitting side-by-side holding hands. Neither takes anything away from the other. The coffee smell is incredible. Also getting a nice nutty note, along with strong notes of vanilla and fig. Damn.
The taste is fantastic, but perhaps a slight notch down from the nose. Here the flavors mingle a bit more and perhaps confuse each other at times. The sweet toffee and vanilla arm wrestle the coffee. I almost wish the coffee were a bit more dominant here on the taste, as it was so appealing on the nose. Pretty sweet overall, with some additional dark fruit notes, maple, and candy. Almost a touch of cotton candy.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a relatively sweet aftertaste (with a bit of coffee). Nice overall. I haven't had many coffee barleywines, and this one stands out as a great one.
