16oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver - nice that some of this stuff is still available a few days after the brewers dropped by here for their tap takeover.
This beer appears a clear, dark bronzed amber colour, with one anemic finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some rather active sea foam spray lace around the glass as things slowly abate.
It smells of lightly smoked caramel malt, a bit of candied toffee, red grape juice, and very mild earthy, leafy, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet, grainy and bready caramel malt, still understated biscuity toffee, muddled and bruised dark orchard fruit, a wisp of ephemeral smoke, gently earthy and floral hops, and a restrained alcohol astringency.
The bubbles are fairly absent in their supposed attempt at even a base frothiness, the body a solid medium-heavy weight, and sort of smooth, with a stilted creaminess trying to get off the ground. It finishes sweet, but duly moderated by the inherent properties of the lingering fruitiness, 'wee' booze, and I suppose, hops.
Overall, a pleasant and engaging version of the style, definitely amped up and nipping at the only imagined cold outside right now (a peculiarity unto itself!). Well-made, and something that would work well in packaged format, oh, I dunno, right after the Yuletide, eh Mr. Burns? (Not a Simpsons reference).
