Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a bottle into a snifter
Best Before 12 Jan 2019
Drunk side-by-side with Wahtula.
APPEARANCE: Clear dark brown pour yields a two finger, medium looking, slightly creamy tan head with good retention. Bistre brown body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full, creamy cap and leaves sheets of lacing down the glass. A half wisp remains until the end leaving lots of lacing on the glass as it empties. Color is definitely too light for the style, but the head is well engineered.
SMELL: Lots of hops here for the style. Citrus, grassy notes, with some leather, licorice and roasted malts in there as well. Plenty forthcoming.
TASTE: Citrus hops and grassy flavors up front. Plenty hoppy for the style. Some roasted character at the swallow, moving into a bold finish of bitter hops, citrus, some roasted and burnt flavors, a bit of licorice, and some booze. Plenty hoppy and lots of bitterness lingers here.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy for sure, a little lighter perhaps, goes down smooth and finishes mouth-coating. A touch of alcohol and lots of bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: An example of more not always being better. To be sure, I’m a fan of hoppier stouts, especially if they’re called Yeti, but this one might be a touch too much. Yes, there’s lots of fun citrus, grassy hops in there, and they were nice, but the roasted stout base kind of gets washed out. I’m pretty sure this is basically Wahtula with lots of extra American hops added. Fun stuff in that regard, at least. Wahtula is better in my view, as this one is too hoppy for the style, but neither are up my alley, per se.
