Shared bottle at local tasting, 11.5% ABV. Black colour, low tan head. Perfumed aroma, roast malts, hints of whisky. Roasty flavour, a little fruit, whisky, coffee, a hint of dark chocolate. Warming mouthfeel.

Dark, semi-opaque pour, with a small and unimpressive head, same as the other beers from this series. Metallic smell, dark cherries and some funk. Bitter and sour taste, with lots of oak and barrel feel, some peat, dark cherries, cocoa and a metallic taste. The body is a bit too light and the alcohol overwhelms a bit.

Got this one on bierlab.nl. Thanks Pim!

Bottled August 2014
Scottish Speyside Whisky barrels
APPEARNACE: Transparent dark brown pour yields a 1+ finger, medium looking, slightly creamy, light tan head with good retention. Head slowly fades to a swirly wisp and ring. Clear bistre brown body with no carbonation evident. A ring and slight wisp remain leaving dots of lacing down the glass. Much like the other variants with a decent head but very light body.
SMELL: A touch of peat, some slightly sharp whisky, oak notes a bit of vanilla cream and some toffee aromas. The whisky is a little harsh, but the light smoky and leathery aromas underneath are nice.
TASTE: Lots of leather and wood up front. Very oaky and leathery at the swallow as well. A touch of smoke and peat accompany the almost overpowering leather and wood flavors in the finish, a lot of tannins as well, with some burnt malt and a hint of sweet cream from the base beer. This is a little too leathery and oaky for my tastes. Not much stout presence either.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A little prickly on the palate, only slightly creamy, goes down okay and finishes a touch astringent.
OVERALL: Not really my favorite barrel treatment I don’t think. Some of the other variants are alright, but this one just rubbed me the wrong way. Far too much leather and oak in the flavor and the barrels have left the beer a little too astringent for the style. Not all that enjoyable and don’t think I’ll bother finishing the bottle. They can’t all be winners.
