Got this at the Duvel guy down the road from the old place.
From a bottle into a snifter
B-wine aged in Scottish Speyside Auchroisk whisky casks
EBU: 65
EBC: 60
Bottled 1 April 2015
Tried this one before the Bunnahabhain version.
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, slightly looser, foamy, light tan head with good retention. Clear maroon brown or burnt umber with no real carbonation evident. Head fades to a half wisp and ring. A ring and slight wisp remain until the end but leave no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Lots of alcohol with whisky, oak, red fruits and toffee on the nose. Aromatic and boozy with some perfume notes as well.
TASTE: Whisky and alcohol up front, with red fruit and caramel sweetness at the swallow. A big aftertaste of whisky, oak, sweet berries and toffee, with a decent amount of hop bitterness as well. Lots of alcohol and some piercing perfume character too, unfortunately.
PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. Fizzy and light on the palate, foamy, goes down fine with a good burn at the swallow and finishes slightly mouth-coating. Some heat lingers.
OVERALL: Too fizzy and foamy for sure. The flavor is quite boozy and alcoholic as well without much added complexity from the barrels. The perfume quality is somewhat off putting too. This is alright, but it's not something I'd go for again. This was the lesser of the two.

Dark ruby pour, almost opaque, with a very (and I mean very) small head that dissipates instantly. Visible carbonation on top, which is a bit weird for me to see in a barleywine. Smells like dark cherries, coffee, cocoa, oak barrel and whiskey. The taste is something else - toffee, caramel, toasted marshmallows, baked apples, whiskey, apple brandy, coffee, cocoa, dark chocolate. Very smooth texture, with a sweet and alcohol-hot aftertaste. Good beer!
