Porter with coconut and coffee

APPEARANCE: Clear, transparent light brown pour yields a 1+ finger, creamy, off-white head with good retention. Sienna brown body, clear, with minimal carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to full wisp cap and clings to the sides of the glass. A half wisp remains leaving some good lacing down the glass. Good engineering but not quite dark enough for the style.

SMELL: Lots of coconut on the nose. Kind of like a pina colada. Vanilla and sweet cream with milk chocolate as well, but the coconut is rather dominating. Notes of roasted coffee beans make an appearance as well.

TASTE: Coconut, alcohol, some caramel and vanilla sweetness up front. A bit of alcohol at the swallow with another dose of coconut and sweet cream, leading into a bolder and lingering finish that is full of coconut, sweet vanilla, milk chocolate, and touches of bitter, roasted coffee as well. Some alcohol lingers too. The coconut is definitely more prominent than the coffee and it's got a little more alcohol presence than I'd expected as well.

PALATE: SLightly thinner body with a touch more carbonation than hoped. Light on the palate for sure, goes down fine and finishes a bit mouth-coating. A bit of alcohol lingers.

OVERALL: This is alright. I don't think the base porter is all that strong to begin with here. I'd expect a darker body and more of a dark grain presence here, especially at this ABV. The coconut is the prominent of the two adjuncts, though it does lend some nice creamy, vanilla sweetness. A bit stronger coffee presence and perhaps some more dark grains in the bill would give this one the boost it needs. As it is now, it's alright, but nothing worth writing home about. Cheers!

Pours pitch black with a big, slightly beige head with lots of tiny bubbles.

Smells of milk chocolate coated earthen malts. Produces a flowery sweetness with perfumy coconut, creating a nice contrast to sweet, but earthy coffee.

Tastes of creamy milk chocolate, which gets amped up by the same perfumy coconut water quality from the nose.
Supersmooth on the tongue with enough carbonation to prevent from getting anywhere close to sticky. Develops a late, dry coffee bitterness among lots of earth and cream.

Creates a nice interplay between coffee and coconut, which features a nice ongoing sweetness, wrapped up by a dryer finish, which still includes both adjuncts.

33cl bottle. Pours a very dark ruby-brown, with a tall beige head that gives way to a lacing that sticks to the edges of the glass. Smells of coconut and roasted malts, dark chocolate and some bitter hops. The taste is rich in coconut, with notes of dark chocolate, cherries and cocoa. A very nice porter.
