The aroma emanating from this brew would have anyone fooled regarding its genre. Rich dark chocolate, raisins, bright red fruit--perhaps wild raspberries--compose the main impression on the nose. The stout-like qualities are backed by even more decadent aromas of toasted oak, caramel, and a hint of spice.
The palate is where this beer gets really interesting. Unlike the aroma which is definitely more barrel and malt-forward than anything else, the sensation on the palate screams "HOPS! HOPS! HOPS! HOPS! HOPS! HOPS! (EVERYBODY!)." Nice well-rounded spicy bitterness composes the initial impression on the tongue, whose impact is immediately caressed by maltier notes consisting of caramel, roasted malts, red fruit, and milk chocolate. There's a slight resinous pine-like sensation toward the back which hints at what hops might be at play here.
Medium-bodied with minimal carbonation; despite the complexities on both the palate and the nose enumerated above, this brew finishes impossibly dry, making you unwittingly take sip after sip after sip...
