Served in a goblet from the can here at cervecería Esparte
Appearance: dark brown mahogany with a tan head rising half a fingers length off the body.
T
Taste: Toffee taste think of butterscotch candy.
Mouth: sticky f'n body. Like white on rice.
Overall: great barleywine if you crave anything hard candy. Easy on the palates yet smooth enough to gulp. Goes quicker than you can think.

I think the test for these strong beers, is usually :
1. are they not overly sweet - i.e. are they balanced enough
2. is there complexity in the flavor.
Happy to say, this one passed the first test easily, and has a beautiful roasted caramel aftertaste along with fruit, although very little hops on the second. Good beer

Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a 440ml can into a snifter
Canned 11 December 2018
Black barleywine with candied fruit
APPEARANCE: Pours out clear bistre brown and yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy, light beige head with great retention. Clear bistre brown body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full wisp and leaves touches of lacing. Touches of wisp remain leaving decent lacing down the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Lots of dark fruit on the nose. Dried dates and prunes, raisins and dark grapes, notes of leather and chocolate, as well as some caramel and toffee aromas. Definitely fruity and malt forward.
TASTE: More dark fruits and malt complexity up front. Prunes, dates and raisins mostly. Some booze and leathery qualities at the swallow, moving into a bold and lingering finish of sweet fruits, grapes, raisins, dates, some leather notes, sweet caramel and toffee flavor, a bit of bitter chocolate as balance, all on a bed of alcohol. Flavors and fruity sweet.
PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine with a bit of a bite and finishes somewhat sticky. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: Well engineered beer for sure. Lots of aroma and flavor and a nice feel to boot. I will admit that black barleywines are rather hit-and-miss with me. When they are overloaded with dark crystal and Special B, they can become closer to an overly strong Belgian dark, which isn’t always my preferred take on the style. This one falls into that category, and while it’s a well-made beer, it’s probably not something I’d go racing for again.
